Bikes, beers, and burlesque. Just another event put on by
the Ton-Up Club Chicago. Starting around midday on Saturday the 29th, people
from all across Chicagoland (and some from as far out as Kentucky and Missouri)
rolled their bikes into Ace Motorcycle and Scooter Co. on Jackson in West Loop.
Just as it sounds, this event is the Ton-Up boys’ answer to the Oktoberfests
that grace us every year. Hanging around all the folks drinking Hobgoblin and
Sailor Jerry just makes me wish I was 21 already. Crisp in the morning and
warming up with the day, Chicago gave everyone a great day to ride and kick
tires. Trophies were awarded to bikes from each country, as well as to Customs,
and, of course, Best in Show. London Calling, a Clash-cover band, kept the
energy up and the vibe rocking. Food was provided by the Magnificent Seven,
and, boy did it satisfy- until they ran out of brats! Look out next year around
the same time to snag some Pumpkin Spice Ale and good times.
This year was special, as it was a tandem event. The weekend of the 29th marked the closing of
the Urban Hooligan Art Gallery, a two-week run of motorcycles, scooters and
“Mods vs. Rockers” memorabilia. It acted, also, as a temporary storefront for
the Ton-Up Club and MotorWorks Chicago, the sponsoring dealership. After a ride
from the Ace to the corner of Clark and Belmont, people poured off their bikes
and into the artsy-party. People wandered in and out of Urban Hooligans and the
kulture boutiques The Architectural Revolution, and The Alley (who sponsored the
event). Miss Ammunition took the stage and dazzled with her signature grinder
routine (you gotta look it up!). If you haven’t seen her perform, it’s a whole
new definition of “Fire Crotch.” If you
missed the gallery, keep an ear to the ground. There’s talk of bringing it back
for the next event, Zombie Hellrider. More information will come as it becomes
available.
Thanks to Larry Fletcher, president of Ton-Up Chicago and
all the Ton-Up boys and birds!
